2020 Rut Cancellation Details

6/18/2020 Communication

Hey Rut Runners,

First and foremost, we want to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of support and positive feedback after our announcement earlier this week. Of course, we would love to see you all this September, but we feel really good about our decision to pivot to the Rut Virtual Runs this year. Moving forward we will work hard to continue providing you all with motivation and inspiration to get out into the hills this summer.

Of course, if the RVR does not work for you, we have provided other options below for your consideration.

There are many important details below, so please read through this email thoroughly prior to making your decision. There is a button at the bottom of this message that you must click on to take action on your decision. Please do not respond directly back to this email stating your decision. You will have from now until June 30th at 11:59 PM MST to make your decision.

Again, thank you all for the overwhelming support this week.  We continue to be blown away by the quality of the Rut community.

Option #1 | I would like to join the Rut Virtual Runs.

We know that one of the biggest values of the Rut is that it keeps you motivated and accountable all summer long to stay fit, active, and ready for a big day in the mountains.  We do not want you to lose that inspiration! That is why we are offering you The Rut Virtual Runs (RVR) to help you stay focused this summer.

How does RVR work?  You keep training for your Rut event this summer and then run the distance of your event on the course and route of your choosing between the dates of 8/29-9/7.  You can then upload your results to our RVR platform.  As an RVR participant, we will send you a 2020 Rut Care Package customized to your distance (which also reflects what you paid for your 2020 entry.)

RVR Runners will receive a Rut care package customized to their distance including

  • 11K – 2020 Rut T-shirt, 11K Finishers Medal, and 2020 Rut Race Bib.
  • VK – 2020 Rut T-Shirt, VK Finishers Medal, 2020 Rut Race Bib, and 2020 Rut Neck Gaiter.
  • 28K – 2020 Rut T-Shirt, 28K Finishers Medal, and 2020 Rut Race Bib, and a pair of Darn Tough Socks.
  • 50K – 2020 Rut T-Shirt, 50K Finishers Medal, and 2020 Rut Race Bib, a pair of Darn Tough Socks, and 2020 Rut Beanie.

*If you have signed up for multiple events, you will receive a care package for the longest distance event you signed up for, and a finishers medal for each event you complete and upload.

All RVR Participants will also receive

  • Training and racing tips from The North Face Global Athlete Run Team.
  • Updates, newsletters, and challenges.
  • Promotions and raffles from our generous partners.
  • Platform to upload your results and see how all your fellow Rut Runners crushed their own RVR.
  • Suggested routes in some of the major cities that our Rut Runners call home
  • Access to the RVR Strava Group

If you choose the RVR your 2020 entry fee will be transferred directly into the event.  We will then follow up with all of the RVR details in July.

Additionally, since the Rut sold out in just minutes this year, we will offer priority registration to those who choose the RVR for either the 2021 or 2022 Rut prior to its opening to the public. You only receive this benefit once but can use it for either year.

We will contact you one week prior to registration opening to the public in 2021 with the opportunity to enter into the event. You will have one week to make your choice.

If you do not choose to enter into the 2021 Rut, we will again give you the opportunity with the same process in 2022.

You can check out more RVR details HERE (hyperlink).

Option #2 | I would like a 50% Refund on my 2020 Rut Entry Fee.

If you choose this option, you will have 50% of your 2020 Rut entry fee refunded to you. Additionally, you will also receive priority registration into either the 2021 or 2022 Rut prior to its opening to the public.

We will process refunds through Runsignup and you can expect to see your refund no later than July 15th.

Option #3 | I would like to defer my entry into the 2021 or 2022 Rut Mountain Runs.

You can choose to have your race entry deferred, at no cost, to either the 2021 or 2022 Rut.  You only receive this benefit once but can use it for either year. If you choose this option we will contact you one week prior to registration opening to the public in 2021 with the opportunity to use your deferral. You will have one week to make your choice.

If you do not choose to enter into the 2021 Rut, we will again give you the opportunity with the same process in 2022.

Option #4 | Donate your 2020 Entry to the Rut and receive priority entry into 2021 or 2022 Rut.

We have had a few requests from Rut Runners who would like to donate their 2020 entry to the event and still receive priority registration into the 2021 or 2022 race.  We will contact you one week prior to registration opening to the public in 2021 with the opportunity to enter into the event. You will have one week to make your choice.

If you do not choose to enter into the 2021 Rut, we will again give you the opportunity with the same process in 2022.

Lastly, we would love for you to choose one of the options above. However, if you take no action, you entry fees will be considered a donation to The Rut. These funds will assist us in putting on great events in the future!

6/15/2020 Communication

Dear Rut Runners,

This is not an easy message to share, so we’ll cut straight to the chase.

We have made the extremely difficult decision to cancel the 2020 in-person version of the Rut Mountain Runs.

Getting to this point has been a very challenging process and it’s disappointing to know we won’t get to share time with you all in Big Sky this September. We modeled numerous scenarios that would encompass all the fun and excitement of an event that we would be proud of during these unique and challenging times.  However, it became increasingly obvious that this is not the year to safely bring runners from all around the country and globe to gather in the shadow of Lone Peak.

Uncertainty

It’s in our DNA to go big at the Rut, but the health and safety of our runners, volunteers, partners, and local community is something we do not take lightly.  With so much uncertainty still surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that canceling the in-person event this year is the only choice.

The Rut Experience

For those who have experienced the Rut, you know it’s three days of festivities and celebrations with an incredible community feel.  It’s a place for old friends to come together, and to make new friends on the trail.  It’s a place to finish your race and then cheer on 400 kids sprinting around the base area in the Runt Run. It’s a place to get dressed up and go to our legendary after-party. It’s a place to spectate runners coming into the Swiftcurrent aid station with hundreds of other cheering fans.  It’s a place to stuff into the Lone Peak Tram with 15 other sweaty VK runners after going cross-eyed up Lone Peak.

We want nothing more than for you to enjoy all that is the Rut experience, but the reality is none of the above-mentioned experiences could be part of our event this year.

With over 3,000 registered participants, we know you will have a variety of needs moving forward.  We have worked hard to provide you with options to choose from in light of the cancellation.  We also must be clear and transparent that this will have a large economic impact on our small business and this event.  We tried our best to provide you with choices that keep your interests at heart but also keep us in a position to hold the event in 2021 and beyond.  We appreciate your understanding.

Participants should keep an eye out for an email out later this week with more details on how to move forward with their decision.

From myself and the whole Rut Team, we thank you for your support of the Rut Mountain Runs and RE Events.  We cannot wait to see you all again when the time is right.

Be Well,
